Tea Party

So – as I mentioned yesterday, in an attempt to give up coffee, I have started to try getting in to tea.

One of my coworkers told me about this fantastic tea place in Edmonton and I had to check it out myself when I was in the city last weekend.

David’s Tea is a Canadian company that started in Montreal a few years ago. They have expanded all over the country, and luckily (for me) there are two locations in Edmonton.

Since I am fairly new to tea drinking (besides a few teas here and there, as well as the Tazo collection from Starbucks) – I certainly hadn’t had much experience with loose tea, which is what David’s is all about.

So I made my way into the store, and was pleasantly surprised – the layout was clean and simple to the left was a wall with sweeteners such as organic honey and agave syrup, as well as different tea pots, cups and pitchers. I had heard a little bit about it from my coworker but I was NOT prepared for what I saw when I looked at the right wall, approximately 100 canisters of loose tea lined the wall.

The salesgirl was INCREDIBLE – asked me what kind of tea I was interested in trying, why kind of flavours I liked, etc. I explained to her that I was trying to cut out caffeine and that I wasn’t certain what kind of tea I liked best. I tried the two teas of the day and told her which one I liked best. She gave me about 5 different canisters to smell, and that’s about all I could handle!!

I picked three of the five flavors she showed me Forever Nuts (which reminded me of autumn), Goji Pop (fresh and fruity smelling) and Pink Flamingo (this smells INCREDIBLE in the bag!! Just like pink grapefruit) – Ironically, every tea I picked turns pink when steeped :)

I drank both the Forever Nuts and the Goji Pop warm and I iced the Pink Flamingo – it was DELICIOUS!!

It’s amazing how delicious these teas were, and I think I paid about $15 for 3 bags (1 of each flavour) which is a bit “steep” (haha!) but it last a LONG time, especially because you only use about 1.5 to 2 tsp at a time.

The other cool part about this place is that you can either buy a tea ball (which I already had something similar to at home) or you can buy disposable fillable tea bags to make your own (which would be great if you were travelling).

Personally, I decided to buy this mug – the Timolino – which is pretty awesome in my opinion, it’s a stainless steel “To Go” mug with a detachable infuser – I got it in the smokey blue color, and I was shocked when I filled it the other morning and an hour later it STILL burned my tongue!

Sorry to have such a long post about products, but I was just beyond impressed by this store, and I think any tea aficionado (or wannabe ;P) should check this place out (if there is one in your town).

Any big tea drinkers out there?? What are your thoughts on loose tea??

I’m not a well versed tea drinker but I am a creature of habit so I tend to stick with what I know.

My absolute FAV is a Tazo tea – African Red Bush. Sbux used to sell it but they swapped it for Vanilla Roobios. *cries*

Ms. Les was able to locate african Red Bush for me so I’ve stocked up. It’s caffine free and so so yummers.

Not sure if you’ve been on facebook, but I posted pics of these weird-ass Japan flower thingies. It’s a flower bud that you plop into the hot water and then it expands into some funky flower thing. It didn’t have much flavor but it was fun to drink!

    Happy Tea-bagging!! :p

  2. I’m pretty sure that’s the place Halifax got right before I left…I bought Tasha’s bday prezzie there. It was a really overwhelming store, I agree!! But my salesgirl was also super helpful!!!

We don’t have one here in Vic but we do have a couple of locations of Teaopia that have opened recently which appear to be a similar concept.

I’ve gotten into Rooibos (very similar, yet different to Lex’s Red Bush…haha…dirty mind) which I like because it’s still a full bodied tea but is caffeine free.

I love David’s teas, we have one here in Moncton and it is wonderful. I really enjoy their Chai flavors as well. Enjoy. I haven’t seen that cup there I will have to look for it next time I am in.

Welcome back by the way!!! Love your “fashion” posts.

    MMMmmmmmm.
    LOVE David’s Tea!
I haven’t met one I DON’T like. I like Bear Trap, Forever Nuts, Buttered Rum…the list goes on!

My manager-ish has a huge collection of David’s Tea and often shares them!

*psst – so happy you’re back – and fabulous as always!*

What a crazy coincidence. I was just going to go to David’s Teas today after work and buy tea and a loose leaf tea thermos thing. Everyone in my office is obsessed with them and I must join the bandwagon. However, I will still be drinking my precious coffee on the daily. ;)

  7. I LOVE David’s Tea!
Definitely something I would reccommend from David’s is the Quangzhou Milk Oolong especially, but all of their Oolongs are delicious. The Mullberry Magic is also pretty brilliant.

I have to restrain myself from going into David’s every day because there’s a store really close to where I live. I have about 32 different kinds of tea from there … it’s a bit of an addiction.

    Happy Steeping!

  8. I’m from Edmonton and when I first moved to Toronto and discovered Davids Tea, I mentioned Edmonton totally needed one. I’m excited that it has expanded! I look forwards to hear more about any future tea tastings you will have.
I just tried the glitter and gold tea. You will have fun with that. It’s not pink, but your tea glitters and shimmers just for a fun touch.
    Good luck!
